A new control strategy for a Dual Hormone Artificial Pancreas system incorporating automatic suggestion of rescue carbohydrates in coordination with insulin and glucagon delivery was presented.
The method allows to select among glucagon or rescue carbohydrate counterregulatory action, providing the same equivalent required control effort as computed by a master controller, following a parallel control structure.
Application of this strategy to overcome constraints on daily glucagon delivery was successfully evaluated in a proof-of-concept in silico study.
